Basil Thai

1175 Folsom St.
San Francisco
(415) 552-8999

Cuisine: Modern Thai

Pluses: Stylish venue with California-Thai creations

Minuses: Decor can fee too industrial.

Overview: Lunch Monday-Friday; Dinner nightly

The look here is bright and industrial. There's a wall made of glass blocks, royal blue walls and touches of yellow, chrome and light wood floors set the scene. Roasted mussels are in a spicy chili sauce, while the tender rings of calamari have an equally searing sauce for starters. There's a marinated skirt steak, topped with a Thai peanut sauce - giving the usual pork with peanut sauce a rest here. Duck is simmered in red curry sauce, with a pleasant sweet/hot flavor and a wonderfully smooth texture. The sleek decor and serene service don't come cheap here, but Basil is a welcome and stylish addition to the SOMA neighborhood.
