Buttermilk Biscuits

by Sally Bernstein

Makes 8 biscuits

1 ¾  cups all-purpose flour
2 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. sugar
½ tsp. baking soda
½ tsp. salt
¼ cup butter
¾ cup buttermilk

Preheat oven to 450°

Combine the flour, baking powder, sugar, soda and salt.  Stir until well blended.

Cut in the butter until the mixture resembles very coarse cornmeal.

Add the buttermilk and mix until the ingredients just come together.

Pat out the dough to a 1 inch thickness on a lightly floured board.  Cut into 8 biscuits
with a 2 inch cutter.

Bake on a cookie sheet.  Biscuits will rise and brown.

Bake 8-10 minutes.
